It takes a whole village to raise a child.
African proverb
Eye doctor Dr. Ulrich Schum of Munich, Germany has been doing volunteer in Diébougou, Burkina Faso, several times a year every year since 2002. A special problem he noticed there was the fact that very few children ( ca 28 % ) were taking up schooling. In the diocese of Diébougou, starting in 2005, Dr. Schum and Mrs Inge K. Borchhardt-Schum have been working on an almost professional school and literacy programme. The programme aims to mainly encourage and enable the poorest families to send their children to school. At the same time visually handicapped children are given access to the eye clinic. This is being achieved through personal talks to the parents and financial support as well as further help, mainly given by the local representative, an optician employed by the eye clinic
At present 102 children and their families are being cared for.
