As early as 2004 bishop Ambroise Ouedraogo of Maradi diocese had pleaded for the establishment of an eye centre in his diocese which covers most of southern Niger.
The district of Maradi so far has no eye doctor and no optician.
The project is aimed at the blind and those with eye diseases and visual impairments as well as the endangered population as a whole in Maradi and its surroundings. This is about 2 million people, Maradi itself having some 350,000 inhabitants and counting.
The project:
total cost: appr. 3100,000 euros
The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development approved the application for this project on 31 January 2007, offering co-funding of 75 percent of total cost.
The project to be realised step by step in close cooperation with representatives of the social and development body of the diocese of Maradi, CADEV. A contract has been signed to finance the training of a certified nurse to be an optical nurse.
More local personnel has to be recruited and trained.
Doctors have to be found to work in Maradi.
The eye centre was funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and Caritas Niger and was opened on 24 January 2011.
