Workshop for physically handicapped people in Wenchi

Ananse e.V. is a German registered organisation that seeks to support development cooperation projects that help people with special needs. The charity, established in 2000, has been a corporate member of Africa Action / Germany for some years now. At present, we focus on Ghana and Kenya where we support partnership projects in education and training as well as rehabilitation and medical services to benefit disabled people. Another focus that we have is income generating programmes for people with special needs.

Our present project: Workshop for physically handicapped people in Wenchi, Ghana

A great number of physically handicapped people live in and around Wenchi, which is situated in the centre of Ghana. Most of them live in poverty. They have no schooling nor any professional training. We intend to set up a workshop in Wenchi in which to offer training to these people. This will help them to move on to earn their livelihoods. The plan is to train tailors, metal workers and others. To start such a project machines and tools have to be acquired. A site to erect the workshop on has been found. The workshop will serve as the nucleus for a more comprehensive training centre for physically handicapped people. The centre itself will be established in several stages. Rural Youth Association ( RYA ) Wenchi is our local partner. It works with and for young people in the countryside and for some time now has been running programmes aiming to support the people of Wenchi and surrounding villages.
RYA Wenchi has as its motto, "Each one helps one." This also serves as the basic tenet of the proposed workshop. People with training and experience will guide the young passing on what they themselves have learned. In exchange they receive a small part of the income from the sale of articles produced.
With regard to this project, Ananse e.V. has Ghana e.V. of Rural Youth of Lower Saxony as its cooperation partner.
