Maternity Ward in Atakpamé
This project is aiming at the improvement of the current primary health care of the population in the urban district Atakpamé Agbonou. The first construction phase entailed the construction of a clinic with a maternity ward, an operating room, a laboratory, a pharmacy and four sickrooms with appropriate sanitary facilities as well as waiting rooms. In phases 2 and 3, further sickrooms as well as accomodation for the staff will be built.
The plan for this clinic has been initiated by "Togo - Neuer Horizont e.V." (TNH) in cooperation with the local administration. TNH was founded by locals as a nonprofit non-governmental organization (NGO) in Atakpamé in 2005. It is composed of members of the local administration, the Catholic Church and citizens. The NGO's declared aim is to improve health care in Atakpamé Agbonou and to educate the population with regard to diet and health matters. Further, it arranges school partnerships and takes care of AIDS-orphans.
Health care in Atakpamé and neighbouring towns is very poor. There is a public clinic, which, however, is insufficiently equipped. A large part of its equipment does not function. Therefore, people in need of appropriate examination and treatment have to travel 80 km to Tchiko. But due to the low average income, many people cannot afford the costs for journey and treatment. Even emergency service in case of accidents cannot be provided. People always face long waiting periods, even in case of urgent diseases. The new clinic will help to reduce all these problems.
In the presence of about 200 guests, the first construction phase of the "Centre de Santé Anna Maria" was started and blessed by the Vice-Minister for Health and the bishop on 9 December 2008. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) covered 75% of the costs.
So far there is no accomodation on the premises available for the nurses. As a part of the patients - especially the birth attendants - also come to the clinic at night and ask for help, two patient-rooms have been furnished for use as an accomodation facility for the nurses so that nurses are always available. But now there is a lack of rooms for accomodation of the patients. Therefore a nurses' home is currently being built, also with funds of the BMZ. A "maternité" - a maternity unit - is to follow.
