Tanzania - what do you think of when you hear this word? Of course - of Sun, Zanzibar, Serengeti, ... But unfortunately you hardly notice anything of this in the little town Musoma, directly at the Lake Victoria in the West of the country. On the contrary: Here, far away from the tourists, life is more than bleak. The region is characterized by appalling poverty and extreme unemployment and with a disability rate of 13% - compared to 2% in the rest of the country - the area is one of the most profoundly affected regions in Tanzania.
To mitigate at least the consequences that result from the latter, a small but steady group of people founded the Lake Victoria Disability Centre (LVDC) already in 2003. In the centre adolescents with disabilities are trained to enable them to lead an independent life. The two-year-training is offered in the areas metalwork and welding, woodwork and making furniture, sewing and knitting and additionally in printing. Furthermore the adolescents are also trained theoretically in economics, sign language, sciences, religion and Swahili. All disabled adolescents are welcome; however there is no capacity for severely multiple disabled or seriously mentally handicapped adolescents. Since 2003 the centre has trained about 210 adolescents.
In this year the centre has to leave its original location in Musoma since the area and the building had only been rented and they are now being reclaimed by the owner. But for the centre this change is also a great chance to finally establish an own location with long-term structures. The financing of a new piece of land and a new administration building has already been agreed. But what is still missing is money for a new workshop building where the adolescents can actually be trained. The new structures will be created conjointly by teachers, students (also former students) and the population of Musoma. This will fortunately result in a dialog between people with and without disabilities what can only be an enrichment for the work of the LVDC. At the same time the adolescents are offered the opportunity to profitably contribute their acquired competences locally. So all in all the enforced move also had its advantages.
The fiscal requirement for the construction of a workshop building is EUR 66,751. We ask for your support. Please mention the keyword below when making donations:
