The eye clinic is in the centre of Burkina Faso's capital Ougadougou not far from the Roman Catholic cathedral. It was the first eye clinic ever in the Sahel region when it was established by members of the French religious order of the White Fathers in 1930. Today it is run by African nuns. In 2002 - 2004 three wings of the eye clinic were extensively renovated and new equipment was provided using funding by aa/D.
The general hospital specialises in ophthalmology but also does general medicine and physiotherapy. It runs an optical workshop and a laboratory, a medicine shop and medicine store; it has an ambulance, etc. The institution is headed by Sr. Marie Noëlie Yadgho, SIC, while Dr. Pierre Savadogo, a state employee, is head of ophthalmology.
As a result of the renovations and the installing of new equipment as well as an increase in staff the number of patients treated has risen to 300 - 400 per week and countin. Special consideration is given to the poorest among the patients. The institution is an important element of the WHO programme VISION 2020 - the right to sight - and the national programme for the fight against blindness, PNLC, Dr. P. Savagodo being a leading person on this programme.
